Organisations 1x1 - Geld

Hi friends,

Nicht nur solltet ihr Geld ansparen, um den Sprachaufenthalt zu bezahlen, sondern auch den Spass. Ich meine, das ganze kostet ja an sich schon was aber Amerika ist das Land der unbegrenzten (Shopping-) Möglichkeiten ;) Und um auch was ausserhalb der Schule und dem Haus der Gastfamilie zu sehen, braucht man - was auch sonst - Geld! Ich muss zugeben, dass ich zwar echt viel angespart habe aber nun trotzdem etwas knapp bei Kasse bin. Überlegt euch also im Vorraus was genau ihr alles machen wollt und versucht so gut wie möglich zu kalkulieren. Hier ein paar Kostendetails, die ich mit euch teilen kann:

Ein Auto mieten für 2 Tage kostet ca. 200$ (also sucht euch Freunde, die mit euch das Wochenende verbingen wollen, damit ihr die Kosten teilen könnt oder sucht euch jemanden der ein Auto gekauft hat xD)

Ein Hotel für 2 Nächte kostet ca. 150$ (pro Zimmer nicht Person).

Shopping: wenn ihr so wie ich seit, dann hat man nie genug Geld dafür  100000000000000000$ ;P

Denkt aber auch daran, dass ihr hier auch sehr viel Geld für Essen und Trinken ausgebt. Frühstück und Abendessen ist zwar in der Gastfamilie inbegriffen (am Wochenende auch Mittagessen), man weiss aber nie, obs dann auch so ist... Ich würde also so 60$ pro Wochen einberechnen.

Zudem wollt ihr auch mal ins Kino oder etwas trinken gehen am Abend 20$ pro Woche.

Wenn ihr Auflüge mit EF macht, kosten die etwa 250$. Es kommt darauf an, wo man hingeht.

An dieser Stelle möchte ich noch stolz hinzufügen, dass ich meinen ganzen Sprachaufenthalt selbst bezahle und dass das beste Gefühl überhaupt ist und man es fast noch ein bisschen mehr schätzt ;) Dies soll aber nicht heissen, dass ihr den Aufenthalt nicht auch machen sollt, wenn eure Eltern ihn für euch bezahlen "müssen" ;) Einen EF Sprachaufenthalt ist aber cooler, wenn man schon 21 Jahre alt ist oder sonst, wenn man hier noch minderjährig ist, in eine Highschool geht und mit den amerikanischen Teenagern was machen kann.

Not only should you save a lot of money to afford your stay but also to have some fun during it. America is the country with the endless (shopping-) possibilities ;) And of course since you are there, you should see as much as you can which costs "a little" money too. I have to admit that I thought I saved a lot but acutally I wish I had put aside more. So it's a good idea to think about what you'd like to to before your trip and calculate the different aspects of costs as well as possible. Following a few details about some stuff you'll come across during your stay:


If you rent a car for 2 days you should calculate to spend about 200$ (make some friends, spend the weekend together and share the costs or look for someone who own a car ;))

2 nights in a hotel: 150$ (per room not per person)

If you are an addict like me, you'll spend a lot on clothes, shoes, accessories ect. xD But 1000000000000$ should be enough.

Bear in mind that you also need money for lunch ect. Of course breakfast and dinner (and lunch at the weekends) is included when you are living in a hostfamily but sometimes you can't count on that.... Make sure saved enough to spend 60$/week on that.

I'm pretty sure you want to go to the movies or have some drinks with your friends once in a while. 20$/week sould be enough.

If you are going on trips with EF you should plan on spending 250$ (for one trip). The price depends on where you go.

On this point, I'd like to proudly tell you that I paid everything by my own. I worked hard for that money and the feeling being able to afford the whole trip is priceless! Of course I'm not judging those who get the thing paid by their parents! It's cool to experince this as a young adult and it's even cooler when you spend your time with natives like in a highschool. For those who already are 21 and over, there are so many amazing things to see/do and make sure you won't miss a thing ;)

Hi lovies,

Ich bin ein super grosser Instagram Fan und wer bis jetzt ein Smarphone besitzt, aber kein Instagram App bzw. Account hat, sollte sich was schämen ;) Oder eigentlich besser, so rasch als möglich mal damit anfangen die Instawelt zu erkunden, kostet schliesslich nichts ;). Es entstehen die schönsten Bilder und es ist schon einfach von dem Aspekt her toll, dass man einfach JEDEM, der Instagram hat, folgen kann (ausser der User ist privat, dann muss man zuerst anfragen, ob man ihm folgen kann). So folge ich schliesslich 73 Leuten mit meinem Account ThisIsNissy und mehr kommen bestimmt noch ;) 
Ein paar Fotos, die mit Instagram entstanden sind, habt ihr hier auf dem Blog schon gesehen. Nun möchte ich euch aber mal was ganz ganz ganz toller oder besser gesagt süsses zeigen. Nämlich der Welpe von Lauren Conrad (manche kennen sie aus "Laguna Beach", "The Hills" (MTV), als Designerin oder als Autorin der Bücher ("L.A. Candy" ect.)). Ich folge ihr auf Instagram und bin echt froh, dass ich diese Posts nicht verpasst habe. Ist er nicht total knuddelig?

PS: das coole ist, viele bekannte Persönlichkeiten haben auch Instagram, so könnt ihr diese ein bisschen stalken =P haha

I'm a super big Instagram fan! If you own a smart phone and you don't have the Instagram app or an account yet then shame on you! LOL. Or the better idea is go and get it, it's for free. You can edit your photos there and they look just amazing! Also cool is, that you can follow everyone you like to (except the privat users, you have to request them). I'm following 73 people and more to come ;) You may already have recognized, that some of the photos you can see on my blog are acutally taken with Instagram.
But now I want to show you something absolutely adorable. Lauren Conrad's puppy! You might know her from MTV's reality shows "Laguna Beach" or"The Hills" or as a fashion designer or author of some really good books such as "L.A. Candy". I'm following her on Instagram and I'm glad I didn't miss those posts! Don't you want to cuddle this little guy all day long?

PS: the cool thing about Instagram is that you can follow celebrities too. So you'll see what's going on in their lifes too and stalke them a bit LOL ;)

Halloween Party

Hi little monsters,

Am Freitag war ich an der Halloween Party in Isla Vista (IV). Dieser Ort ist bekannt für die irren Partys und echt, es ist genau so wie man es in den Filmen sieht. Die Kostüme der Frauen (oder z.T. Mädchen) waren echt knapp. Mehr als Unterwäsche war das echt nicht. Es war aber trotzdem lustig, nur die vielen Polizisten haben uns keinen Gefallen getan. Sie versuchen die Partys in IV zu stoppen. 
Es war cool man dabei gewesen zu sein, aber mir hat einmal gereicht und ich bin somit am Samstag nicht nochmals hingegangen. 

Nun aber zum wichtigsten...WIE FINDET IHR MEIN KOSTÜM? ;)

On Friday we went to the Halloween party in Isla Vista (IV). This place is famous for its crazy parties and really, it is like in the movies!! The costumes of the women (or girls) were really sexy and with sexy I mean they also could have gone in underwear. It was very funny =) Unfortunately, the police was like everywhere and so there was not really a party but hundereds of people walking in the streets. Music wasn't allowed so it wasn't like the other parties on the weekends. The police try to stop the Halloween party in IV, which is very sad because where else should all the people go?
To see how americans celebrate Halloween was cool but it's not really my thing. But now to the most important thing: How do you like my costume? ;)

Organisations 1x1 - Wichtige Dokumente

Hey cuties,

natürlich dürft ihr vor und während eurer Reise die wichtigen Dokumente nicht vergessen. Ich sag euch, auch für mich, als diplomierte Kauffrau (und die kennen sich doch mit Papierkram aus ;)) war das nicht ganz einfach. Denkt daran, dass Visum früh genug zu beantragen. Und am besten macht ihr das NICHT im Winter. Ich stand im Februar eine ganze Stunde vor der Botschaft bei -15°C(!) und habe dann nochmals eine Stunde drinnen gewartet. Zieht euch also besser warm an oder geht im Frühling oder Sommer ;) Was ihr für Dokumente braucht, um das Visum zu beantragen seht ihr HIER. 
[schon komisch, wenn man an die Zeit zurück denkt, wo jeder Tag fast nicht enden wollte und man die Familie und Freunde bei jeder Gelegenheit mit "Wenn ich in Kalifornien bin.." oder "In Kalifornien..." Sätzen zugestusst hat]

Vergesst auch nicht die notwendigen Versicherungen abzuschliessen. Entweder habt ihr eure eigene (prüft, ob alles abgedeckt ist) oder die ERIKA Versicherung von EF.

Auf die Reise solltet ihr dann folgendes mitnehmen:

• Das Flugticket (hin und zurück)
• Pass (schliesst Visum mit ein)
• I-20 Formular
• Dokument von EF, welches sagt, wie die Einreise in die USA abläuft 
• Dokument mit der Notfallnummer von EF, falls irgendwelche unerwarteten Problem auftreten.

Für euch (und EF):

• Kopie Pass und Visum
• Bankkarten und die dazugehörige Nummer, um diese zu sperren
• Versicherungsunterlagen übersetzt in English (Kopien für EF)
• Kopie Fahrzeugausweis [meinen Internationalen Führerausweis habe ich bisher noch nie gebraucht]

For your journey you shouldn't miss to bring the most important papers with you. There's a lot to organize before you leave the country and I tell you that's not as easy as creating a new Facebook group. Be aware of appling for your Visa early enough, so you don't have to worry or getting stressed because it's possible that you have to wait a long time until you get an appointment. Furthermore, I recommend going to the embassy in spring or summer but not in winter. I had to wait one hour outside (no easy task when it's only 5°F) and one more inside. See here (and translate to your language with the tool on the left sidebar) what kind of papers you need to apply for a visa.

Having the right insurance during your stay is vital, either you have your own or the ERIKA insurance with EF.

That's what you should take with you for the trip:

• Your flight ticket (go&back)
• Your Passport (including your Visa)
• The I-20 form
• Papers you got from EF about entering the country
• The emergency number of EF, just in case...

What you should take with you (for you and EF):

• A copy of your passport and the visa
• Your creditcards / bank account cards and the emergency numbers to lock them
• Insurance papers in English (for you and EF)
• A copy of your drivers license [I never needed to show my international drivers license, though]

Organisations 1x1 - Packen

Hi guys,

seit ich in Kalifornien bin habe ich immer wieder gemerkt, dass eine gute Organisation im VORAUS sehr wichtig ist. Es ist schon ein grosser Schritt, den man macht, wenn man sich dazu entschliesst für eine längere Zeit ins Ausland zu gehen. Wer sich dann wirklich dazu entschlossen hat, ist einfach viel zu aufgeregt, um an alles zu denken und will einfach nur, dass es los geht. Was ich persönlich besser hätte machen können, wäre:

Pack den Koffer nicht zu voll ;)
Vor allem Frauen haben ja immer das Problem, dass einfach alles SO wichtig ist und auf jeden Fall mit muss. Doch eigentlich würden 4 Shirts, 2 Tops, 2 Pullover, 4 paar Hosen (2 Jeans & 1 Leggins & 1 Jogginghose), 1 Kleid, 2 Röcke, 1 Jacke, 2 paar Schuhe (Sandalen & Sneakers) und ein Badetuch völlig ausreichen. Unterwäsche kann man nicht genug mitnehmen, nimmt ja nicht viel Platz weg, wenn man nicht auf diese Grossmutterschlüpfer steht ;). 
Ausserdem hat man immer noch die Sachen, die man während der Reise an hat (Halstuch nicht vergessen -> Klimaanlage). Alles andere wird man sowieso zu genüge hier finden und wer einmal angefangen hat zu shoppen, wird nicht so leicht zu stoppen sein - ich spreche aus Erfahrung xD

Kosmetikartikel sind hier übrigens nicht billiger, diese könnt ihr also gut von zu Hause mitnehmen. Jedoch haben die hier viele Marken & Produkte, die wir, zumindest in der Schweiz nicht haben.

Vergesst übrigens nicht auch Schreibsachen und mindestens einen Schreibblock einzupacken, ihr seit ja auch dort, um zu lernen.  

Kopfwehtabletten und etwas gegen Husten kann nie schaden. Es ist nämlich gar nicht so einfach hier sowas zufinden. Nicht weil die Amerikaner die nicht in jeder Supermarket Pharmacy führen aber weil sie einfach alles in Hülle und Fülle haben und es schwer ist, sich für etwas zu entscheiden und das dann auch so wirkt, wie man es erwartet.

Was auch sehr von Vorteil ist, ist wenn man ein altes Handy mitnimmt. Ich musste mir nämlich hier eines kaufen, weil mein iPhone 1. gesperrt ist für amerikanische SIM Karten und 2. ich es auch immer benutze für Whatsapp usw. (Data Roaming aber abschalten! WIFI gibts hier fast überall und in der EF Schule sowieso).

Wenn man in einer Gastfamilie wohnen wird, ist es eine nette Geste ihnen was aus dem eigenen Land mitzubringen. 

Fotos von der eigenen Familie und von Freunden, geliebten Haustieren ect. sollten nicht fehlen. Klar kann man heutzutage alles im Internet (Facebook ect.) anschauen, es ist aber trotzdem noch schöner, wenn man Bilder im Zimmer aufhängen kann - man fühlt sich einfach mehr "zuhause". 

Ein Adapter mitzubringen wäre auch nicht schlecht. Ich meine, nur für den Fall, dass man auch mal skypen oder das Handy laden möchte. Natürlich sind die auch hier in den Läden erhältlich, falls man den Zuhause auf dem Bett vergessen hat ;)

Die wichtigen Dokumente sollte man aber lieber einpacken (ins Handgepäck). Dazu aber mehr im nächsten Post.

PS: Und wehe ihr vergesst eure Fotokamera!!!! =P

PPS: alle oben genannten Vor-/Ratschläge sind aus der Sicht einer Schweizerin und anwendbar für einen Aufenthalt in Kalifornien.

Since I've been to California I recognized over and over again that I didn't do as well as I thought in organizing things. It's a huge step to "leave" your family and friends for a long(er) time and the excitement is just overwhelming! Those are things I could have done better:

What goes in the suitcase, what stays home:

Especially women tend to over packing. I mean, everything just seems so important ;) I thing those things should you bring: 4 shirts, 2 basic tops, 2 sweaters, 4 pants (2 jeans, 1 leggins & 1 sports pants), 1 dress, 2 skirts, 1 jacket, 2 pair of shoes (sandals & sneakers) and a towel - that's it! Underwear doesn't take much space, so bring all you got (assumed you don't wear those granny panties ;)). 
Besides, you still have the clothes you're wearing during the trip (don't forget a scarf -> air conditioning). The rest you're going to buy there because once you started shopping, you won't stop anymore - I know what I'm talking about xD

Cosmetic product aren't really cheaper here, so bring them with you, if you like to. However, they have a lot of brands and products we don't have at home (in Switzerland), so you may want to buy some of those.

Some pens and a notebook for the school days aren't unimportant, so bring them with you or buy them here (but the things here suck, the papers in the notebooks are as thin as the toilet paper here xD).

Some kinds of medicine is going to find its way in your suitcase anyway (mom will get you to pack it in). It's not easy to find the right medicine here because they just have too much of everything! 

I would have been grateful, if someone had told me that I should bring an old cell phone with me. My iPhone is locked, so I can't use it with the american SIM card; I had to buy a new one here. I use my iPhone (data roaming turned off) with WIFI and text me friends via Whatsapp, so it's good to have two phones.

If you are staying in a hostfamily, don't forget to bring them a present. It's a nice gesture and makes you symphatetic ;)


Bring photos of your own family and your friends. It's a piece of home and you can decorate your room with them.

You want to charge your phone now and then? Bring a adapter ;) In case you leave your home with the adapter laying on your bed, there are lots of shops where you can buy one, so no worries.

Important papers and form should go in your carry-on luggage. More about that in the next post =)

PS: And don't forget the most important thing...your photo camera!!! =)
