Hello there,

I know you all are afraid to be lonely when you travel alone to a foreign country but honestly, you will never be on your own. Even a nice yet shy smile can lead to something big - a friendship which last forever or maybe even a relationship. Even on the street a stranger will talk to you randomly. I promise, you don't have to say a word and there will be stanging a woman next to you, smiling at you and pay a compliment perhaps because she likes your shoes or your hair. I just want you to know that travelling to a country you've may never been to before is a great adventure and guys ADVENTURES ARE FUN! ;) If you choose to go to school and attend the classes, you make friends in a heartbeat. They want, as well as you do, to meet other people and make friends and I'm telling you there's nothing easier than that. People are curious by nature. You look different, you smell different, you act different. Which leads us to: where are you from? what are you doing here? TELL ME ABOUT YOU. So you do and because you are curious to you will ask questions as well. This, my lovely people, we call a conversation. So you are talking to this strangers and these strangers are may becoming your friends. It's as easy as that and I KNOW you are able to do talk and start a conversation since you do it every day of your life.

I had the best time of my life in Los Angeles and I honestly LOVE the guys of EF! They made my stay so much easier and even the teachers became really good friends of mine. they are simply awesome! We went for dinners together as a class, on tours and even to beach on really hot summer days. It's incredible that even the school director herself is taking care of you if you are in need. I can't wait to see them again some day (and I hope it's not taking too long).
So I'd like to say THANK YOU EF LOS ANGELES! It's so nice to see that they still remember me that well and are waisting no thoughts but publishing this super cute post!

Me, My Life, My Friends

long time no see...
I decided to write blog only in the english language from now on since I'm pretty sure you all are pros and speak/write/know english (even) better than me ;)

How are you all doing? 
I'm great and my life is pretty much AWESOME these days! The only thing bad or I should say sad is that I'm no longer in California! God, I really miss it a lot!! But then, I've got those lovely readers who became friends and share the experiences they make in California with me. I love to hear that you are happy with your decision and you really do have the time of your lifes! 

So I'm happy for you and I'm happy because I'm going to visit my lovely friend Sophie (as seen here) from Germany in July! And it comes even better: Sandy is going with me!! How awesome is that??!! I'm so excited to see my lovely friends I've met in LA again! I miss them sooo much!
So I count the days and hope it won't take too long - haha ;)

What I Wish For..

Es ist wieder so weit, Weihnachten steht vor der Tür! Ich muss hiermit ein Geständnis ablegen: Ich hasse Weihnachten!! Alle Leute sind gestresst und müssen unbedingt noch ihre ganzen Geschenke zusammen kriegen, der Tannenbaum steht Zuhause im Weg (echt, warum stellt man eigentlich einen Christbaum auf?) und alle geben vor, sie verstehen sich prächtig und sind beste Freunde auch wenn sie sich vielleicht ein Jahr lang nicht mehr gesehen haben und das wahrscheinlich aus gutem Grund oder?!

Okay, das war ich letztes Jahr (und all die Jahre davor ;)).
Dieses Jahr bin ich eifach nur überglücklich an Weihnachten Zuhause zu sein mit meiner Familie und dem süssesten Familienmitglied überhaupt (nee, auch wenn ihr jetzt bestimmt überrascht seit, dass das nicht ich bin, es ist..) unserem Hund! Ihr könnt euch nicht vorstellen, wie sehr ich mich auf ihn freue, ich vermisse ihn so sehr! Seht selbst, ist er nicht allerliebst?!

Wenn du für eine Zeit im Ausland bist, dann merkst du erst was dir Zuhause fehlt und du lernst dies erst richtig zu schätzen. Hiermit meine ich vor allem meine Familie und Freunde! Ich freue mich so sehr sie wieder einmal zu knuddeln und dies ist mein grösster Weihnachtswunsch! Aber (haha wer hat's erahnt?! ;)) da sind auch noch weitere eher Kleinigkeiten, die ich mir wünsche:

• Bitte bitte bitte, irgendjemand soll uns doch vom Flughafen abholen (ich hab einfach sowas von keine Lust meine ganzen Koffer in einen Zug zu hiefen;))
• Sisco (siehe Link zum Bild oben) muss unbedingt Zuhause sein und mich begrüssen!
• Ich wünsche mir von meinem Bruder, dass er mein Zimmer ein bisschen putzt (nur der Boden ist auch ok) und
• dass ich in einem frisch bezogenen Bett schlafen kann

Das ist auch schon alles. Ziemlich bescheidenen Wünsche findet ihr nicht ;))

Was wünscht ihr euch?

It's THIS time of the year again...CHRISTMAS TIME..and I have to admit, I hate it! The whole stress with the presents, the absolutely stupid, useless christmas tree and the worst, all the stressed out people, who are pretending loving each other and being best friends, even though they haven't seen each other for maybe..yeah, maybe a year!!

Well, that was me last year ;)
This year I'm absolutely happy! I'm happy that I'll be home (I'll arrive on Christmas Eve), surrounded by my family - not the "whole" family but MY family - my mom, my dad, my brother, my grandma, my grandpa and the cutest of the family members (well, I know you all tought that is going to be me, but nope, it's..) my puppy! Oh my gosh, I can't tell you how much I miss him! See yourself..isn't he adorable?

If you are abroad, you really learn to appreaciate "home". In this case I refer to the family and friends ;) To see them all and give them a huge bear hug is the best Christmas present ever! BUT (haha) there are some other things I wish for, when I come home:

• Please, someone pick me/us up at the airport (I really don't wanna take a train with my luggage ;))
• There has to be Sisco (the cute doggy) at home and say "hello" to me
• I'd like to make my brother cleaning up my room (just the floor is okay too ;))
• and please, I'd like to sleep in a fresh & clean bed

That's pretty much it. Isn't it wonderful how simple my christmas wishes are? =)

Pros & Pros

Hi friends,

Ich bin nun schon seit 231 Tagen in Kalifornien und seit 90 Tagen in Santa Barbara. In 9 Tagen werde ich meine Eltern in Miami, FL treffen und in 24 Tagen werde ich Zuhause sein und den Rest der Familie wiedersehn und auch meine schweizer Freunde wieder um mich haben. 

Ich kanns nicht glauben, dass alles so schnell vorbei gegangen ist!! Ich kann mich noch so gut daran erinnern, als ich die Idea zu diesem Sprachaufenthalt hatte und wie ich ihn dann endlich planen durfte. Der erste Tag in Kalifornien war überweltigend und fühlte sich einfach nur unrealistisch an. 

Hier möchte ich ein paar Dinge auflisten, die ich an Kalifornien mag und welche, die ich nicht vermissen werde aber in der Schweiz dafür um so mehr geniesse ;) Here we go:

+ Kalifornien
Klima - bin bis im November am Strand gelegen, was uns auch schon zum nächsten Punkt führt..
Strand - die Palmen, der Sand, das Meer - herrlich!
Aufstehen - 8 Monate frühstens um 7 Uhr aufstehen (und das sowieso nur 2x in der Woche ;)
Shopping - nirgens kann man so gut einkaufen wie hier! Kleider ect. und nicht Lebensmittel..versteht sich oder?! xD
Refill - man bestellt sich ein Sprite und sobald das Glas leer ist, kriegt man es wieder voll - UMSONST!
Freundlichere Leute - sorry guys, aber die Kalifornier sind tausend mal freundlicher als die Schweizer! Vielleicht liegts auch am schönen Wetter..?
Pizza-Dings - keine Ahnung wie man es nennt aber es hält den Käse auf der Pizza von der Schachtel fern
Englisch - ich muss ehrlich zugeben, dass ich die Sprache Englisch besser mag als meine Muttersprache (Schweizer-) Deutsch
Reinere Haut - ich glaub es liegt am Wetter und am stressfreien sein
Busticketpreis - wer kann schon für 1.50$ (in Santa Barbara 1.75$) überall hinfahren wo die Buslinie durchgeht?! (zum Teil dauert die Strecke über 45 Minuten)
Free WiFi - das gibts hier fast in jedem Restaurant, in jedem Kaffe, eigentlich fast überall!! 
Alle Feiertage - die Amerikaner wissen wie man feiert und einen freien Tag zu einem langen Wochenende macht ;)

+ Schweiz
Mein Bett - ihr könnt nicht erahnen wie ich es vermisse! Eigentlich mein ganzes Zimmer... xD
Auto - in dem ich überall, zu der Zeit, irgendwo hinfahren kann (ich fahr nicht so gerne Bus auch wenns umweltfreundlicher ist)
Waschmaschine - Eine, die ich füllen kann so wie ich will und meine Kleider ganz wieder rausspuckt ;)
Toilettenpapier - 3-lagig und flauschig (haha)
Leitungswasser - welches man auch trinken kann
Job - der Geld (zum Shoppen) mit sich bringt und einem das Leben erleichtern und verschönert. Ausserdem vermisse ich es ernsthaft...das Arbeiten mein ich!
Essen - ihr könnt euch nicht vorstellen wie ich mich auf (einfach irgendetwas) "schweizerisches" zu Essen freue!
Das Gesetz - die Schweizer sind da grosszügiger und lassen einem doch noch mehr Freiheiten..

Natürlich könnte ich hier auch meine Familie und Freunde auflisten aber die stehen eh alles in den Schatten... 

Bestimmt habe ich ganz viele Sachen vergessen aber mein Hirn ist voll mit Gramatik, Vokabular und anderen Nützlichkeiten für das Examen am Samstag, 1. Dezember und am Mittwoch, 5. Dezember 2012 ;) Eventuell kommt ja euch noch etwas in den Sinn (schreibt mir einen Kommentar oder eine E-Mail: denise.probst@hotmail.com)?!

I've been here in California since 231 and in Santa Barbara since 90 days. I'm going to meet my lovely parents in 9 day in Miami, FL and the rest of my family and my swiss friends in 24 days! 

I just can't believe how fast this time went by!!! It seems like yesterday when the idea for this trip came to my mind. The first day in California was simply overwhelming and it felt so unreal.

Now, I'd like to list some things I really like about California and some that I may not going to miss so much, but enjoy back in Switzerland ;) Here wo go:

+ California
Temperature - I went to the beach (only wearing a bikini) in November!! This already leads us to the next point...
Beach - the palm trees, the sand, the ocean - amazingly beautiful!
Getting up - it's been 8 months and the earliest I got up was at 7am (only 2 days a week, the rest of the time I'm sleeping in ;))
Shopping - there's no place like America! I love the stores and I'm surely coming back (with an empty suitcase and a full purse xD)
Refill - just order e.g. a Sprite and when you drank it all, get a free refill! That's how life should be...
Friendly people - sorry guys. but californian people are a hundred times friendlier than the Swiss are...it may is because of the weather ;)
Pizza thingy - no clue what the name of it is but it keeps the cheese on the pizza and prevents it from sticking on the box
English - I have to admit that I like the English language more than my mother tongue (Swiss-) German
Pure skin - I don't know if it's due to the weather, the stressless life or the air, but no pimple had been seen for a long time ;)
Bus ticket - pay 1.50$ (in Santa Barbara 1.75$) and you can ride the bus from Long Beach to LAX!! Unbelievable!
Free WiFi - provided almost in every restaurant, caffee - well acutally almost everywhere! 
All holidays - the American know how to celebrate and even better, how to extend the days ;)


+ Switzerland
My bed - you can't imagine how I miss it! Actually my whole room... xD
Car - in which you can drive everywhere you want, every time you want (I'm not really the bus-typ, even if it would be better for the environment)
Washing machine - One which I can load with my beloved clothes and get them back clean ;)
Toilet paper - soft and fluffy xD
Tap water - which you can drink without filtering before 
Job - I realized how much I actually love to work, to earn money (to spend mostly on clothes ;)) and to be independend.
Food - you have no idea how much I miss "swissish" food! 
The law - the Swiss are a little more easy going when it comes to law ;)

I don't list my family and friends because there is nothing that has even a slight chance to win against them ;) Unbeatable, that's what they are!

I'm pretty sure there is lots more but I just can't think of it right now. My mind is focued on the up coming exam on Saturday and next Wednesday! If you can think of something else, don't hesitate to leave a comment or send me a mail: denise.probst@hotmail.com

Organisations 1x1 - Geld

Nicht nur solltet ihr Geld ansparen, um den Sprachaufenthalt zu bezahlen, sondern auch den Spass. Ich meine, das ganze kostet ja an sich schon was aber Amerika ist das Land der unbegrenzten (Shopping-) Möglichkeiten ;) Und um auch was ausserhalb der Schule und dem Haus der Gastfamilie zu sehen, braucht man - was auch sonst - Geld! Ich muss zugeben, dass ich zwar echt viel angespart habe aber nun trotzdem etwas knapp bei Kasse bin. Überlegt euch also im Vorraus was genau ihr alles machen wollt und versucht so gut wie möglich zu kalkulieren. Hier ein paar Kostendetails, die ich mit euch teilen kann:

Ein Auto mieten für 2 Tage kostet ca. 200$ (also sucht euch Freunde, die mit euch das Wochenende verbingen wollen, damit ihr die Kosten teilen könnt oder sucht euch jemanden der ein Auto gekauft hat xD)

Ein Hotel für 2 Nächte kostet ca. 150$ (pro Zimmer nicht Person).

Shopping: wenn ihr so wie ich seit, dann hat man nie genug Geld dafür  100000000000000000$ ;P

Denkt aber auch daran, dass ihr hier auch sehr viel Geld für Essen und Trinken ausgebt. Frühstück und Abendessen ist zwar in der Gastfamilie inbegriffen (am Wochenende auch Mittagessen), man weiss aber nie, obs dann auch so ist... Ich würde also so 60$ pro Wochen einberechnen.

Zudem wollt ihr auch mal ins Kino oder etwas trinken gehen am Abend 20$ pro Woche.

Wenn ihr Auflüge mit EF macht, kosten die etwa 250$. Es kommt darauf an, wo man hingeht.

An dieser Stelle möchte ich noch stolz hinzufügen, dass ich meinen ganzen Sprachaufenthalt selbst bezahle und dass das beste Gefühl überhaupt ist und man es fast noch ein bisschen mehr schätzt ;) Dies soll aber nicht heissen, dass ihr den Aufenthalt nicht auch machen sollt, wenn eure Eltern ihn für euch bezahlen "müssen" ;) Einen EF Sprachaufenthalt ist aber cooler, wenn man schon 21 Jahre alt ist oder sonst, wenn man hier noch minderjährig ist, in eine Highschool geht und mit den amerikanischen Teenagern was machen kann.

Not only should you save a lot of money to afford your stay but also to have some fun during it. America is the country with the endless (shopping-) possibilities ;) And of course since you are there, you should see as much as you can which costs "a little" money too. I have to admit that I thought I saved a lot but acutally I wish I had put aside more. So it's a good idea to think about what you'd like to to before your trip and calculate the different aspects of costs as well as possible. Following a few details about some stuff you'll come across during your stay:


If you rent a car for 2 days you should calculate to spend about 200$ (make some friends, spend the weekend together and share the costs or look for someone who own a car ;))

2 nights in a hotel: 150$ (per room not per person)

If you are an addict like me, you'll spend a lot on clothes, shoes, accessories ect. xD But 1000000000000$ should be enough.

Bear in mind that you also need money for lunch ect. Of course breakfast and dinner (and lunch at the weekends) is included when you are living in a hostfamily but sometimes you can't count on that.... Make sure saved enough to spend 60$/week on that.

I'm pretty sure you want to go to the movies or have some drinks with your friends once in a while. 20$/week sould be enough.

If you are going on trips with EF you should plan on spending 250$ (for one trip). The price depends on where you go.

On this point, I'd like to proudly tell you that I paid everything by my own. I worked hard for that money and the feeling being able to afford the whole trip is priceless! Of course I'm not judging those who get the thing paid by their parents! It's cool to experince this as a young adult and it's even cooler when you spend your time with natives like in a highschool. For those who already are 21 and over, there are so many amazing things to see/do and make sure you won't miss a thing ;)

Ich bin ein super grosser Instagram Fan und wer bis jetzt ein Smarphone besitzt, aber kein Instagram App bzw. Account hat, sollte sich was schämen ;) Oder eigentlich besser, so rasch als möglich mal damit anfangen die Instawelt zu erkunden, kostet schliesslich nichts ;). Es entstehen die schönsten Bilder und es ist schon einfach von dem Aspekt her toll, dass man einfach JEDEM, der Instagram hat, folgen kann (ausser der User ist privat, dann muss man zuerst anfragen, ob man ihm folgen kann). So folge ich schliesslich 73 Leuten mit meinem Account ThisIsNissy und mehr kommen bestimmt noch ;) 
Ein paar Fotos, die mit Instagram entstanden sind, habt ihr hier auf dem Blog schon gesehen. Nun möchte ich euch aber mal was ganz ganz ganz toller oder besser gesagt süsses zeigen. Nämlich der Welpe von Lauren Conrad (manche kennen sie aus "Laguna Beach", "The Hills" (MTV), als Designerin oder als Autorin der Bücher ("L.A. Candy" ect.)). Ich folge ihr auf Instagram und bin echt froh, dass ich diese Posts nicht verpasst habe. Ist er nicht total knuddelig?

PS: das coole ist, viele bekannte Persönlichkeiten haben auch Instagram, so könnt ihr diese ein bisschen stalken =P haha

I'm a super big Instagram fan! If you own a smart phone and you don't have the Instagram app or an account yet then shame on you! LOL. Or the better idea is go and get it, it's for free. A Perfect Day

der gestrige Tag war einfach perfekt! Mein bester bisher in Santa Barbara! Ich habe ausgeschlafen, habe ein meine liebsten TV Serien angesehen, mich fertig gemacht, bin mit Sabrina und Christina fein essen gegangen, sind zum Snow Patrol Konzert (es war hammer!) und anschliessend noch zu Yorgurtland, um unseren liebsten Nachtisch zu essen: Frozen Yogurt! Ich bin echt mega happy und kannst nicht erwarten euch im nächsten Post mehr darüber zu erzählen!

Sabrina, Christina and I

Yesterday was simply a perfect day! My best here in Santa Barbara so far! I slept in the afternoon, watched my favorite TV Shows, got ready, went for dinner with Sabrina and Christina, went to the amazing Snow Patrol concert and finally had our favorite dessert at Yogurtland! I'm super happy and can't wait to tell you more about the concert in the up coming post!

Bella Italia

Hey there,

Letzte Woche haben Melanie und ich in ein italienisches Restaurant an der State Street getestet. Also eigentlich war ich schon einmal im Palazzio aber für Melanie war's das erste Mal. Da wir nach 3 Lektionen (à je 1h 20min) Cambridge Kurs am verhungern waren haben wir uns auf die grosse Portion gefreut - haben aber trotzdem nur die Kleine bestellt. Nachdem ich knapp 1/3 gegessen hatte, war ich total überfressen und musste schon fast den Hosenknopf öffnen xD Melanie hat übrigens brave AUFGEGESSEN!!! Keine Ahnung wie diese Bohnenstange das macht...^^

Emfehlenswert ist es auf jeden Fall, vor allem auch für grössere Gruppen (dann kann man nämlich die kleine Portion teilen oder auch eine Grosse bestellen ;)).

Last week, Melanie and I tried out an italian restaurant on State Street. Actually I've already been at Palazzio's but it was the first time for Melanie. We were starving after 3 cambridge course lessons (4h in total) but still ordered the smaller portion. I just could handle 1/3 of the pasta, then I gave up and almost had to open the botton of my pants xD 
Melanie ate it all!!! I have no idea how this skinny person can eat so much (and not gaining any weight!!!) ^^

I recommend the restaurant, especially for bigger groups. It's nice to share a small portion with someone or even order the "normal" one ;)

Me Against The Kilos

Hi lovies,

Da das Essen hier nicht wirklich zu gut ist aber es halt immer diese riesen Portionen gibt, habe ich schon 7 Kg zugenommen! Da ich im Flugzeug nicht für zwei Sitze zahlen will, gehe ich jetzt regelmässig Joggen. Unvorstellbar für die, die mich kennen xD Aber Tatsache ist, ich muss was machen und da all mein Geld für Shopping ausgegeben habe, kann ich mir jetzt das Fitnessstudio nicht mehr leisten ;) 

Es ist aber gar nicht so schlimm wie ich es mir vorgestellt habe. Also selbstverständlich konnte ich mich nach dem ersten Mal nicht mal mehr auf einen Stuhl setzten (Muskelkater) aber dafür habe ich mich während der Stunde, die Nadine und ich gerannt sind nicht übergeben =P Aber nun zu den schönen Dingen am Joggen:

1. Ich werde fitter
2. Meine Hageldellen (so nenn' ich Cellulite) werden weniger
3. Ich lerne die Umgebung besser kennen

Das Problem: Der Sonnenuntergang am Butterfly Beach raubt mir jedes mal den Atem ;)

Da ich meine Kamera leider nicht mit zum Joggen nehme (Gott wie würde denn das ausehen xD), habe ich bisher noch keine Fotos von Sonnenuntergang hier. Ich bin mir aber sicher, dass ich den auch mal noch auf Bild bringen werde.

Okay guys, I already told you that the food here isn't that good but the portions are always HUGE! No wonder, I gained 7 Kg (about 15.5 lbs)! Since I really don't want to pay for another seat in the airplane, I decided to do something. Nadine and I are going for an one hour run at least five times a week. Unfortunately, I can't afford the gym because I spent all my money for shopping ;) 

Actually it isn't as bad as I imagined. I mean, of course I could sit down the day after the first time jogging but I didn't threw up, that's something, isn't it?! xD But now to the nice things about jogging:

I'm getting fitter

I can say goodbye to my cellulite

I won't get lost anymore, since I'm getting to know my environment better

The problem: The sunset on Butterfly Beach is BREATHTAKING!! lol

Because it would look really weird, if I would bring my camera to go jogging, I couldn't take any pictures of it yet. But I'm positive that I'm going to take some shots someday =)So don't forget to stop by from time to time ;)
